New D & G ad with Scarlett Johansson

I can't stop staring at the new Dolce ad with Scarlett Johansson. She's totally channeling Marilyn Monroe in this. Also trying to figure out when it would next be appropriate for me to wear seafoam green eye makeup.

More from InStyle.

Henrik Lundqvist Dating Swedish Princess

Apparently, New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has to wait until the off-season to score... Boo-yah! The papers in New York have linked Lundqvist with Swedish Princess Madeleine. I guess that makes sense, hockey players are almost royalty in Sweden. More here.

Wow, these are amazing! Note to friends and family: my birthday is coming up. Link here.

Mark Carney makes Time’s Top 100

Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of Canada, has been named to Time Magazine's Top 100 most influential people of 2010.

He was ranked No. 21 on Time's list of 25 influential leaders. Brazil's president, Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, was named No. 1 on that list, with U.S. President Barack Obama coming in at No. 4. Other categories covered by the Time 100 list included thinkers, heroes and artists.

"Central bankers aren't often young, good-looking and charming, but Mark Carney is all three -- not to mention wicked smart," the magazine said in its Top 100 issue.

Top-Paid Female Chief Executives

According to Forbes, many top female executives (of which there ain't that many to begin with!) are not earning as much as their male counter parts.

According to compensation experts, the disparity in pay can be attributed, in part, to the tendency of female executives to choose a straightforward salary and bonus package over a stock and options laden one. It's less riskier, but often results in less money in the end.

Irene Rosenfeld of Kraft Foods (above) tops Forbes' list of the highest-paid female chief executives. See how happpy she is? That's because her compensation is on par with her male peers at other food companies.

Bulletproof T-shirts

I've always maintained that boron is my favourite element. Now, it appears that science agrees with me. Canadian Business has a story on bulletproof t-shirts. Turns out that when you combine cotton and boron, and you get a T-shirt that can stop a bullet. Awesome. I know 50 cent's clothing line will be all over this!

Supreme Court Justice Louis LeBel

Lawyers Weekly chats with Supreme Court Justice Louis LeBel.

He provides insights on divisions within the top court, how he feels when he's on the dissenting side and the cases that challenged him the most, and offers his view on the leadership of Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin.

It's not really controversial stuff, but always useful to hear from "the Supremes."

Countess LuAnn de Lesseps

OMG this is the worst/best thing I've heard in ages! Countess LuAnn de Lesseps of the Real Housewives of New York has put out the most unintentionally hilarious dance single.

You can hear it here. Oh man, she also has this awesome website.

Jezebel describes it best:
"Real Housewife LuAnn De Lesseps has officially entered the musical canon with her new song, 'Money Can't Buy You Class.' Simply put, it's a masterwork of spoken-word WASPiness and forceful autotuning."

Oh also, remember Kim Zolciak's single Tardy for the Party? That was good, too.

And, don't forget Jo de la Rosa - "You Can't Control Me."

Courtney Love aka Courtney Michelle

More from Courtney Love aka Courtney Michelle. I came across another interview with her by Darryl Sterdanm of QMI Agency. Full interview here.

By the way, my bf Nicki tells me the new Hole album is amazing. I've yet to listen to it, but I trust Nicki's taste.

Here's an excerpt:
"And like a hurricane or a tornado, you can't fully appreciate it until you've survived the experience, hanging on for dear life while the storm blows past... Courtney talked about anything, everything, and sometimes nothing in particular. Buddhism, booze, her boobs and yes, Bette Davis — they were all part of her rapid-fire, stream-of-consciousness monologue, along with discourses on sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll, fame, fortune and fashion. Names were dropped. Grievances aired. Confessions made. Most of my questions went unasked. The ones I could wedge in sometimes went unanswered. And a publicist's futile attempts to get Love to move on to her next interview were swatted away like so many pesky flies, lost in Courtney's swarm of words."

Here is a clip of Hole live playing a song from their new record:

Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia

I read about this guy, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia also known as Dimitri Karageorgevich, in Vanity Fair (or was it Vogue?) the other say at the Salon. Now, I've caught him again in the NYT.
Mr. Karageorgevich, is the rarefied real thing: calculations vary widely, but Wikipedia puts him 1,375th in the line of succession to the British throne. He says he is related to each of the 11 reigning royal families in Europe — among his great-grandparents were Duchess Elizabeth of Bavaria, King Albert I of Belgium, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia and Prince Nicholas of Greece. Lean and dignified, he could pass for an older brother of the white-suited, beauty-kissing princes of storybooks and Disney movies. He speaks French, Spanish and Italian — and English with a hybrid accent of the three. He is agile enough to chat graciously about books and charm paparazzi.

Surprisingly, this slideshow where he discusses his princely-ness (prince-itude?) is fascinating and not pompous as at. Not bad for someone with so much royal blood.

The Economics of an Ugly Boyfriend

I found this little gem on the Freakonomics blog: turns out there may be a reason all those supermodels date ugly guys.

Daniel Hamermesh argues that human capital matters in the love matching market that is dating. Turns out looks aren't the only thing we match, "we also supply personality and the ability to get ahead, both of which are valued by the labor market and thus by potential spouses."

He adds that, "careful research shows that, compared with average-looking women, good-looking women marry guys with an extra year of education. Today, an extra year of education is associated with about an extra twelve percent annual earnings."

Stephen Hawking + Aliens

World renowned scientist Stephen Hawking believes extraterrestrial life almost certainly exists -- and humans should be extremely cautious about interacting with it.

"To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational," Hawking says in a new Discovery Channel series called Stephen Hawking's Universe. "The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like."

More here and here.

"Mental Checklist" for Husbands?... and Friends?

The Times has a slightly tongue-and-cheek but also kinda serious suggested list of "rules" for selecting a husband. Jezebel thinks the general concept could be usefully extended to friends as well.

Potential Husband Musts: (According to Shane Watson)
1) Must genuinely like women (as in all women, not just fit under-thirties). You can test this. Your fat single best friend will help. Also, he should totally get Sue Perkins, Miranda Hart and scary Sue in Glee.
2) Must have some men friends from way back (and, no, footballers do not count).
3) Must be kind. Without exceptions. Mean cracks about SuBo or Patsy Kensit or Rebecca Adlington are a giveaway.
4) Must not be gay. (Seriously. I know at least three people who married gay men thinking they were just artistic. It doesn’t end happily, ever). Can be almost gay and should genuinely enjoy Mamma Mia! and Alan Carr.
5) Must be capable of equating love with responsibility. Owning a dog is a start.
6) Must have a passion besides you (his work would be a good one).
7) Must have the same attitude as you to sex, money and family. (How much of each is desirable. The best use of it, and so on.) Shopping together and agreeing on what the word “holiday” means is a bonus.
8) Must have some pride.

Why read law blogs?

Volokh Consipracy's Eugene Volokh, Professor of Law at UCLA, speaks on the role of law blogs as a source of immediate, expert information and opinion in the modern media marketplace:

Plastic Surgery out in Hollywood?

Looks like Heidi may have done all that work for nothing. Poor girl.

Laura M. Holson of the New York Times found, when discussing plastic surgery with several directors and casting directors in Los Angeles, that obvious surgical enhancements, once considered fairly standard in the industry, are now considered career-killers.

Forbes Woman

The ever-informative Forbes Woman has two articles of interest.

(1) They've got a piece discussing stereo-types of single women at the office. The story says that singles may be able to devote more time to their careers, but some say they feel stigmatized in the workplace for not being married with children.

(2) They've got an article discussing the issue that men and women still prefer male managers --and that may not be a good thing.

Jilian Lauren & the Sultan of Brunei

Wow, this is crazy. The Gloss has an interview with Jilian Lauren about her time living as member of the Sultan of Brunei’s harem. Even weirder, she's now married to, Scott Shriner, the bassist from Weezer. I don't even know how to tag this!

Here's one excerpt:
"In 1991, when she was 18, suburban New Jersey girl Jillian Lauren left New York to become a member of the Sultan of Brunei’s harem. She was recruited by a “casting director” who promised her $20,000 to stay for 2 weeks. She’d be expected to attend nightly parties and be at Prince Jefri’s beck and call. Jillian stayed for a year and a half. During that time she jockeyed for position with the other Harem girls, flew to Singapore for six figure shopping sprees and began the process of finding herself. She tells about it all in her riveting memoir Some Girls: My Life in The Harem, which is due out April 27th."

Summer Job Tips

Corporette has two useful posts for those starting summer jobs.

(1) Building Your Wardrobe for the Summer Internship: here.
- You'll probably need only 3-5 suits to be worn whenever you know for sure you’ll be seeing a partner, executive, or other VIP that day. Keep an extra suit in your office if at all possible.
- Basic suits should be: black, navy, or gray.
- Get them drycleaned approximately every 4-5 wearings.
- Get non-suit pieces to wear as separates throughout the summer.

(2) Further Etiquette and “No Duh” Tips For Your Internship: here.
- If your company or firm invites you to a closed-door meeting of any kind — deposition, mediation, etc. — do not check your Blackberry. (Check your Blackberry when the partner does)
- Keep your shoes on in meetings.
- No gum.
- If you don't like academic endeavors, pretend that you do. Avoid saying things like: "Oh, yuck, the library? I hate reading."
- If your back (and computer screen) faces the door/hallway, special rules apply. (No thong showing, facebook, shopping websites, even Corporette should be considered, by you, off limits during the workday. (In fact, employers not only have the right to check your computer’s browsing history and so forth, but it’s also been reported that more than 70% do so. Keep this in mind while browsing the Internet this summer.)
- Don't drink too much at summer events.

Are Friendships Key To Workplace Happiness?

Forbes Woman has an informative article on the importance of workplace friendships. Turns out that whether it's strategic alliances, lunch partners, workplace friendships, or full on real friends - workplace relationships have a huge impact on workplace satisfaction.

Not a super-surprising, but nice to see confirmation of something I've felt (in a good and bad way) first hand.

Imagine if you worked with Putin and his way of showing friendship was winking? Ha!

Ontario Diamonds On Sale

Wearing ethical jewelry is super important to me. The idea that some terrible war may have been supported by an object that's supposed to represent something wonderful and beautiful to me just doesn't compute.

So, news of the first 100% made-in-Ontario diamonds coming to retail has me over-the-moon. The first batch consists of 100 spectacular diamonds that are completely mined, cut and polished exclusively here in Ontario.

The diamonds will be sold only at Birks flagship store on Bloor from April 26 to May 1.

Mike Babcock's hair

This is so funny! Turns out Mike Babcock's hair has it's own facebook page.
And, so does his McGill tie. Amazing. Both pictured below.

When I look at this picture, I imagine Mike asking "Does your hair have a facebook page? I didn't think so." Full story here.

Essie bought by L'Oreal

Fashionista reports that Essie was bought by L'Oreal yesterday. Hope they won't change too much! I just got a manicure today and they used this fabulous Essie colour: "Over the Top." It's got a gun metal smooth semi-gloss finish - probably inappropriately dark for Spring but I just loved the colour.

I promise to get something from the Spring line (see below) next!

Courtney Michelle

The National Post (of all places) picked up a story that ran in Britain’s NME Magazine.

The artist formerly known as "Courtney Love" is reverting back to her real name. “We’ve all decided we don’t like her anymore,” she told NME Magazine. “The name Courtney Love, it feels like I’ve outgrown it.”

She now wants to be referred to as Courtney Michelle. (Her birth name is Courtney Michelle Harrison.) She is touring with her band Hole and promoting their new album, Nobody’s Daughter.

Robyn - "None of Dem", "Fembot", and "Dancehall Queen"

Hat tip to my girl, Nicki, for showing me that the first THREE tracks of Robyn's album are now available on Pitchfork. You can hear "None of Dem", "Fembot", and "Dancehall Queen" here.

Dexter is back at work!

Very happy to report that Michael C. Hall is recovering well and is back to work. Michael was undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma. The fifth season of Showtime’s Dexter begins filming in June. Can't wait! More here.

UPDATE: His wife, Jennifer Carpenter, has just announced that he has "fully recovered" from Hodgkin's lymphoma. Amazing! Now he can get back to dealing with Miami's worst.

Sophie Milman

The Globe & Mail has a piece about the state of Canadian copyright law.

Jazz singer Sophie Milman and her husband, lawyer Casey Chisick, say Ottawa is failing to protect artists’ rights.

I know nothing about Canadian IP law, but I do know that Sophie Milman is one of my favourites. You can watch her live here and here.

Thunder Cats Movie

Hat tip to my friend Blake for pointing out that there is a siiiiiiick trailer for Thunder Cats on youtube. Unfortunately, it's fan made. But awesome nonetheless. Check it out:

May - InStyle

The May InStyle magazine should be arriving in my mailbox any second. This month's cover girl is Scarlett Johansson. This is will be welcome post-exam reading!

You can watch the video for a song from her album with (one of my absolute favourite people) Pete Yorn here. Seriously, the entire album is amazing. I've listened to it like 800 times.

Bonnie Hunt

I was procrastinating today, watching The Bonnie Hunt show. Anyway, I found this Real Housewives of Atlanta parody she did featuring Kim & Nene. It's awesome! The way Neicy Nash says "Key-m" is golden.

Better Way To Cupcake

I recently, started reading the Tosh.O blog. It's hella funny. He found this post online and wrote about it.

"When I saw this diagram of how to turn a cupcake into a cream sandwich from the blog Dispatches from the Island, it blew my mind. How the hell have I gone my entire life never having seen this? Things like this always remind me of the first time someone pointed out that little holder under the gas nozzle so you don't have to squeeze the handle while you pump your gas. For years, I had been standing there squeezing the thing like a moron when I could have been wandering around enjoying a cigar.Just goes to show you we're all one hyperlink away from realizing we are idiots. Me especially."

Extravagantly Upholstered Sofa

I love this sofa, but in a kind of "wow, it's beautiful, but I would never, ever put this in my house" kind of way. My best friend, Nicki, on the other hand... she'd totally rock this out.

More here.

b5media

The Financial Post has an article on Toronto-based blogging network b5media.

They've created Crushable and its sister sites thegloss.com and blisstree.com and managed to pull in more than three million unique visitors per month and were recently named "rising stars of the gossip blogs" by The New York Times.

Well done, ladies!

Carrie Underwood's Winning Style

I'm not really into country music, but Carrie Underwood looked adorable in this dress at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Apparently, she wore THREE different dresses that night: one for the red carpet, then two different dresses for her two performances.

Negotiation Tips

I found a great new blog called The Glass Hammer. It's an online community designed for women executives in financial services, law and business.

I was impressed with the post on 5 Negotiation Tips that Work.

Here are the highlights:
1. Overprepare: Before entering any kind of negotiation, take the time to organize yourself from an informational standpoint.
2. Keep the Ship Steady: Prepare not only your facts–but also your demeanor. Walking into a negotiation without preparing can be disastrous, as can spontaneous or emotion-driven negotiations.
3. Ask Questions Strategically: In a negotiation, open-ended questions can be extremely powerful.
4. Use Silence for a Change: Silence can be one of the greatest negotiation strategies at your disposal.
5. Look for Mutual Gains: Look for a way for both parties to win.

Hyacinth

I bought a potted hyacinth today.

It's got three unopened blooms. I'm going to stare at it until they open.
This is my reward for studying indoors, during the incredible weather that's coming our way this week.

Robyn - "None of Dem"

Robyn just put a new song called "None of Dem" on her official site. It features Norwegian electronic duo Röyksopp.

She's got THREE new albums coming out. The first of which is due in stores on June 14. Can't wait!

Candace Bushnell

Times Online has an in depth interview with "Sex and the City" creator Candace Bushnell. The article aims to discuss how different the two women are, but since I knew so little about Bushnell before reading the piece, I ended up learning how similar they are. Notice they even have the same initials? C.B.

Either way, I love the photo of her, she looks so relaxed and fabulous.

Women and Name Changing

Women who choose to adopt their husbands’ surnames may be penalized in the job market, a new behavioural economics study from the Netherlands suggests.

The NYT has picked up the study and provided commentary here.

The big news? (1) There were demographic differences between women who chose to take their partners’ names and those who did not. Marital name-changers were generally older and less educated, for example. And, (2) Even when name-changers and maiden-name-keepers are demographically identical, they still may be judged differently.

New He-Man Movie!

It looks like they are making a He-Man movie. Sweet!

One of my brother's is actually named after He-Man. Well, almost... I tried to convince my parents to go for "He-Man" but they would only swing for "Adam," "Prince Adam" being He-Man's real name. Why did I want my brother to be named He-Man, you ask? Because that would make me She-Ra, who was his sister. Score 1/2 pt for 4 year old me on that one.

Anyway, People has some thoughts on who should play He-man in the new movie. I don't like any of their ideas. Yes, He-Man is known for his incredible strength, but recall that he'd only resort to combat as a last resort, preferring to outsmart his enemies. We need someone with brains to play He-Man. Not these goof-balls.

Tennessee town elects dead man for mayor

Despite having passed away a month before the vote, Carl Geary was elected mayor of his town with over three times as many votes as his nearest competitor.

Amazing! Macleans has more here.

"Run Norway" app from the Apple Store

The Huffington Post reported that Jens Stoltenberg, the Prime Minister of Norway who has been stranded in New York City because of that crazy volcanic ash that has forced international flights to be canceled, has been running his country from an iPad.

Tosh.O has this hilarious commentary on the matter:
"Yes, that picture above is Stoltenberg running Norway. Apparently, he downloaded the Run Norway app from the Apple app store. But really? You shouldn't be able to run a country from an iPad. This isn't SimCity. In fact, you shouldn't have to run a country from an iPad. Get a freaking laptop, hippies!"

Derek Blasberg

Derek Blasberg has been making the rounds, here, here, and here promoting his new book "Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady." It's a tongue-in-cheeky etiquette guide that advises women how to behave.

The National Post has the best quote about the book: "Certainly, in an age of too much MTV and not enough pants, the mood is ripe for guidance in gentility."

Lessons in ladyhood go from basic but forgotten (how to introduce people, how to write a thank-you note) to the maybe-should-be-forgotten ("how a girl treats her bag is how she might treat a boy").

Derek's website is here.

The "Mommy Track" Turns 21

Slate has a piece discussing the “Mommy Track,” 21 years after people first began talking about it.

Author, Angie Kim, concludes optimistically: "the line between the fast-track and the mommy-track is blurring...The language of the mommy track—flexibility, balance—is infiltrating more and more jobs and replacing traditional work values—long hours, face time—as the new workplace ideal."

She even suggests replacing the term with a gender-neutral term like "sanity track," which deals with work-life balance issues for men and women.

Happiness Tips for Lawyers

Gretchen Rubin is the author of The Happiness Project. Above the Law Blog asked Gretchen to offer some happiness advice aimed at a lawyerly audience. Link to her guest post here.

Her biggest tips:
- Get enough sleep
- Get some exercise
- Manage pain and discomfort
- Control the cubicle in your pocket
- Take control of your physical environment

Gretchen's work has also been highlighted here, here, and here.

Courtney Love

The NYT has an indepth piece on the ever-wild Courtney Love who is promoting her new album “Nobody’s Daughter.”

I've seen Courtney live a couple of times, she's a presence - powerful, bold, individual, feminine. Through all her problems, I've always found her compelling. Here's hoping the new album sees her say healthy!

I love this description of Courtney's room as a study in chaos: "Racks of clothing, from 1920s vintage to this season’s Miu Miu, lined two walls. The floor was littered with boxes of photos. Empty coffee cups, half-finished bottles of juice, opened bags of candy, overflowing ashtrays and stacks of books on Buddhism and psychology were seemingly everywhere. And at the center of it all, at once manic and serene, brash and vulnerable, sat Ms. Love, watching on a battered laptop YouTube videos of her duet with the Irish singer Gavin Friday at a benefit for Red, an African AIDS charity, at Carnegie Hall."

Flare back for fall

This fall, flared legs are back. They popped up on the fall runways of Derek Lam, Balmain, and Gareth Pugh, to name a few.

Bye, bye skinny jeans. It's been fun. More here. I'm ready for the change, flares are just so much more flattering. Though, I will miss never having to worry about hemming my pants.

New Earrings

I entered an FB contest and won credit toward these.

They came in the mail today!

I love this company. Canadian. Ethical. Beautiful.

I <3 Anzie.

J. Crew

Why don't we have a J. Crew in Canada, yet?

I love, love, love this braclet.

Karlie Kloss

This is what Tyra Banks means when she says "modelling isn't easy!"

Karlie Kloss did this shoot during the NY fashion week blizzard. That's right, she was outside, in a bathing suit, in a blizzard. Insane. At least it was for a big deal job: the shoot was done by Annie Leibovitz for April's Vogue.

NY Mag link here

Watch Huntin'

I've been on the prowl for a nice watch lately.
Nordstrom's Watch Shop is amazing.

(This is a great distraction from exams!)

Britney's Unretouched Photos From Candie's Ads

Jezebel does an amazing job tracking and analyzing the worst photoshop offenders in Hollywood. Usually, photoshoppers don't want to be revealed, but apparently Britney wanted to release these images. Either way, I'm glad celebrities are acknowledging that their perfect image is a fabrication.

Print Mixology

NYT Style Section has an article on how to mix prints.

There's also a related slide show here. Actually, I didn't really like the pics in that slide show. The models look bizarro, no? Also, I've been in a super neutral mood lately. I actually think this photo of Whitney Port is a lot closer to how I'd mix prints.

Anyway, here are the tips from the NYT article:

1. Vary the scale. Mix a small neat print with a splashier one. Or an eye-popper with one that’s more neutral.

2. Stay within the same color family.

3. Mix up the fabrics, the weights — a rough-textured fabric with a more refined one. Somehow a nubby, slubby fabric pairs up more naturally with a flat weave than do two smooth-textured fabrics.

4. Toss in some polka dots, stripes or even leopard prints, which are easier to mix with other patterns because they’re simple and graphic. And they’re familiar to the eye.

5. Consider the accessories. Though it’s fun to tote a print bag with a print frock, you can tone down the brights with a great tan leather bag or pair of sandals. Straw works, too.

Case of Bysiewicz v. Bysiewicz

Funny story from the WSJ Law Blog on Susan Bysiewicz.

Bear with me here because the punch line is great...

Bysiewicz wants to become Connecticut’s next attorney general. Thing is she might not qualify, because Connecticut law requires that “the Attorney General shall be an attorney at law of at least ten years’ active practice." Butwhether Bysiewicz has “ten years’ active practice” under her belt depends on whether her service as Secretary of State qualifies. If it does, she’s got well over 10 years; if it doesn’t she’s only got six years’ experience.

To find out, Bysiewicz filed suit — against herself — in her capacity of Secretary of State. Herself? That’s right. After all, part of her job as Secretary of State is to explain and defend the state’s election laws to a variety of candidates. If she doesn’t like the law, the office to sue is the one that enforces them — her own.

Amazing.

Stella: Chain-link bracelet

I found this gorgeous braclet online. Wow, would this not be the perfect accent to every outfit? I think so.

Ellen is a vegan

Ellen DeGeneres is on the cover of Shape magazine.

Normally not blog-worthy, except that she's a committed vegan! DeGeneres says her regular regime includes “no animals, no dairy, nothing processed; a lot of soup, veggies, rice, beans, legumes.” And she views these dietary restrictions as a positive thing, saying, “I want to be on my toes; I want to have energy. And as much as the diet seems like a sacrifice, it’s helping me.”

Amazing!
