Candy maker issues chocolate bonds

The CBC has a funny story about how British confectioner Hotel Chocolat hopes to raise the equivalent of $7.3 million by issuing bonds in which the payments are made not in money but in chocolate.

The U.K. chocolatier is taking advantage of low interest rates to fund its expansion plans. Under the scheme, 100,000 of its Tasting Club members — who already pay for home deliveries — will be offered the opportunity to put up between 2,000 and 4,000 British pounds ($3,000 and $6,000 Cdn) for a three-year "chocolate bond." The less expensive bond earns the buyer a delivery of 18 pounds ($27 Cdn) worth of chocolate every two months, the equivalent of a 6.72 per cent yield. A larger investment earns 7.29 per cent, because the same shipment will come monthly.

I look forward to reading their candy-coated prospectus.

Too Many Friends on Facebook?

Last year, the Economist ran an article saying that basically primates can really only have meaningful friendships with 100-200 people maximum, beyond that our brains can't compute.

It appears Facebook thinks the threshold is MUCH higher. According to a recent NYT article, some Facebook high rollers have hit 5,000 friends at which point Zuckerberg et al step in and say "no more."

Wow, the most I`ve ever seen like 1,000 or so from kids who went to camp a lot.

The current count for this new video on YouTube is 9.4 million. Wowza! More here.

Toronto is the 16th most Liveable City

Toronto is among four Canadian cities that made the top 25 in the world for quality of living.

The Mercer Quality of Living survey looked at 221 cities and compared how they ranked on factors such as crime, health, education, transportation, recreation, housing and environment. The list is often used by multinational companies to determine appropriate compensation and incentives for executives asked to relocate.

Vancouver shared the fourth spot with Auckland, New Zealand. Ottawa ranked 14th, Toronto placed 16th while Montreal came in at number 21. In case you were wondering, Baghdad remains at the bottom of the quality of life list, at No. 221.

Protein - Meatless Mondays

Chris Elam at the Huff Post has a great post about just how much protein people consume. Wow, the kids are alright! Turns out that whole "am I getting enough protein?" question really isn't a problem for most people. Here's a run down of the protein content of some common foods. The bottom line? When it comes to protein...we don't need animal protein all the time.

Broccoli -- 4 grams in 1 cup
Brown Rice -- 5 grams in 1 cup
Refried beans -- 7 grams in ½ cup
Soymilk -- 7 grams in 1 cup
Peas -- 8 grams in 1 cup
Tofu -- 11 grams in 5 oz
Oat Bran -- 16 grams in 1 cup
Lentils -- 18 grams in 1 cup
Chickpeas -- 18 grams in 1 cup

Money-Saving Tips For Wedding Guests

Wedding season is upon us! With that in mind, Forbes Woman has a video interview with the Editor of The Knot explaining how to save money, while still being a fabulous guest. Very useful information like book your hotels and flights as soon as you get the "save the date" to save money. Also, make sure you "step up" your gifts - the first gift (say, the engagement gift) is smaller than the second (say, the bridal shower), and the actual wedding gift should be the largest.

Law & Order: Bye Bye NYC but Hello Los Angeles

The NYT reports that NBC confirmed on Friday that another cherished New York brand was moving to Los Angeles. The network canceled the original “Law & Order” series after keeping it on the air for 20 years. In its place, NBC is ordering a new drama, “Law & Order: Los Angeles,” moving the franchise to a place where there are presumably more murders to investigate.

I'm still pretty heartbroken about this. I love Law & Order -- I mean, the intro song for the show is the ringtone on my phone. I get some funny looks, but I feel like Dick Wolf deserves at least my ringtone for all the awesomeness that he has spawned. Anyway, I hope that Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto's character) magically gets transferred to the Law & Order: Los Angeles show.

Nars Lip Glosses

Nars is pairing with Sephora to produce a new line of lip glosses inspired by the brand’s most popular blushes. Five Nars blushes — Albatross, Angelika, Oasis, Super Orgasm, and Luster — will be available in gloss form in Sephora stores starting July 29. I think Oasis looks good. You can bet I'll be buying these when they come out! More here.

Star Wars Pancake Molds

Williams Sonoma has struck inter-galactic gold with these. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a Jedi Kitchen Master created an epic breakfast to unleash the power of his Jedi Padawan. Using the Force, he created three pancake molds in honor of his favorite galactic heroes and villains: Yoda, Darth Vader and a stormtrooper. More here.

Tea Submarine

I'm not much of a tea drinker, but if I was, this would be the coolest thing in a while. It's a tiny yellow plastic submarine that's actually a tea strainer. I feel like sound effects would also be necessary when using this goodie. More here.

Food Fight Breaks Out in Ukrainian Parliament

Lowering the Bar picked up a hilarious story about a food fight breaking out in the Ukrainian Parliament. During a recent battle over whether Russia's lease on the naval base at Sevastopol would be extended, opposition lawmakers set off smoke bombs in the chamber and threw eggs at Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn. Lytvyn took shelter under an umbrella and kept working as the eggs continued to fly.

Sending a Message That You Don’t Care

Christine Pearson writes in the NYT that misusing electronic devices at work can send the wrong message. She and her colleagues and I have gathered data on incivility from more than 9,000 managers and workers across the United States. The verdict?

Chances are that if you ignore your colleagues while jabbering on your cellphone, keep others waiting for an appointment while you check your e-mail or send something electronically that should be delivered in person, some people will see you as inconsiderate.

Makes sense. She advises keeping your own use of electronic devices at a minimum when interacting with others. If you have an urgent need to use one, let others know.

Essie Resort

I don't usually try wild nail polishes, but Essie's latest resort collection might just sway me. Chanel's resort show featured models with blue toes, if Karl says it's "ok" - it must be ok, right?

Lapis of Luxury is a moody, periwinkle blue with a subtle sheen, while Turquoise & Caicos is a light leafy green. My manicurist says people are requesting the green like crazy, but I think I'll try the blue first. What do you think?

Countess LuAnn de Lesseps - New Single

Oh the Countess has struck gold again with this hilarious new song! Last night on Bravo's live show Watch What Happens, Real Housewives' the Countess performed a snippet of her new song (unfinished) "Chic, C'est la Vie," which she describes as "spoken word over a Saint-Tropez beat." Oh man, this is awesomely bad. Click through to Jezebel to watch the video here.

Forbes’ Highest-Paid Model List

Forbes has published it highest paid model list for this year. It looks like Gisele wins again. Check out the smizing in the photo on the right -- that's why she gets paid the big bucks, people.

2. Heidi Klum - $16 million
3. Kate Moss - $9 million-
4. Adriana Lima - $7.5 million
5. Doutzen Kroes - $6 million
6. Alessandra Ambrosio - $5.5 million
7. Natalia Vodianova - $5.5 million

OPI Swiss Collection

All Lacquered Up has the scoop on the new OPI Swiss collection, which launches on August 1st, 2010. It appears to be a lot of reds and shimmery bottles.
I'm not really feeling it with the exception of maybe 'William Tell Me About OPI', which is the purple-y one in the middle below.

Paloma Picasso Bead Necklace

I'm loving this Paloma Picasso Bead Necklace from Tiffany. I think it's a fabulous alternative to pearls (not vegan-friendly). It's got black onyx, gray moonstone, and tourmalinated quartz. Ooooh and it comes in 18", 36", and 60" long for different wearing options.

FYI: Paloma is Pablo's grand-daughter.

‘Law & Order’ in Jeopardy?

What?! Someone at NBC better be pulling a publicity stunt. The NYT reports that TV's longest running series 'Law & Order' may be in trouble. At this point there are also reports that talks are continuing and that the show might still avoid a cancellation, but people who work on the pioneering crime drama were told Thursday afternoon that the show had been canceled. NBC declined to comment. This is awful news! NBC better get its act in gear, this is the best show on television. Hopefully, long-time fans of the show will demonstrate enough support to keep it on the air. More here, here, and here.

Secrets of Body Language

Meghan Casserly discusses how to spot a lie in the workplace at Forbes.com.The study of body language became popular in the 1970s when experts began to analyze the link between physical gestures and truth-telling. Since that time, we've developed a running list of signals or "tells" that tip us off as to whether or not the person we're talking to is lying: avoiding eye contact, touching one's mouth when speaking, fidgeting--each one so-called body talk for telling lies.

Here are the highlights:

Watch Those Lying Eyes
There are three common tells linking lying to eye contact: excessive blinking, eyes moving to the left and lack of eye contact.

Beware of Barriers
In the study of body language, a barrier or physical blockade is something put up to protect or distance one person from others. Look for folded arms, one knee crossed over the other to widen the distance between two people or props.

Handy Behavior
When people put their hands to their mouths when speaking, it is an indicator that they are unsure of the words they are speaking, says Wilke. Similarly, the medical and psychological communities agree that the left hand (or left side, again, ruled by the right hemisphere of the brain) is linked to a person's sense of self.

Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb go make-up free on the Today Show

I love KLG and Hoda in the morning. Those women are hilarious! And, now they've got on the no make-up train. Nice going, ladies!

Gold from a vending machine?

Leave it to UAE to come up with this. Now you can buy a gold bar as easily as grabbing a chocolate bar. A new vending machine, called Gold To Go (which is itself covered in 24-carat gold), was unveiled Wednesday at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Customers can choose between six coins of different weights engraved with either a kangaroo, a krugerrand or a maple leaf to reflect the gold's country of origin. Wow, insane! More here.

How Businesses Create Wealth

Uwe E. Reinhardt is an economics professor at Princeton. He's got a great post (with useful picture below) exploring how companies create “value” and distribute it among various stakeholders. It's a great introduction to understanding how business activity ramifies in society. More here.

Seven Secrets Of Highly Successful Businesswomen

Forbes Woman has a another great post with advice from successful business women. Carol Hymowitz sat down with four allstars at the the Aiming High luncheon hosted by Legal Momentum. She talked with Ellen Kaden, senior vice president, law and government affairs at Campbell Soup; Bridget Healy, executive vice president and chief legal officer of ING; Deborah McWhinney, president of Citi; and Vicki O'Meara, executive vice president and chief legal and compliance officer at Pitney Bowes. The women all come from different background, but these rules for success resonated with all four of them. More here.

Buying and Selling used Luxury Bags

I'm loving this WSJ article on where to sell your luxury bags when the romance is over. It's a common enough experience to lust after a pricey bag and then want to get rid of it later. Several new online services have sprung up specifically to cater to sellers of used "it" bags—particularly, women who want to extricate themselves from a relationship with an expensive pocketbook and recoup some of the purchase price as efficiently as possible.

I'm more interested in scouring these websites for sales rather than selling (someone's gotta have some Stella bags, right?). These are the main sites mentioned: Fashionphile.com, Yoogiscloset.com, Strictlypursonal.com, and Covetshop.com.

Versace Wins $20M in Counterfeit Lawsuit

Fashionista has picked up a story about the on-going Versace lawsuit. Seven years after Versace filed a counterfeit suit against Los Angeles-based manufacturing company Tres Hermanos Inc. and its owner, Monir Awada, the luxury brand has prevailed. Awada was ordered to pay the brand $20 million in damages for selling fake Versace t-shirts and other items like jeans and sweatshirts to at least 72 stores in the Los Angeles area. Versace probably won’t ever see any of his money because Awada probably isn't worth that much BUT the ruling is another positive step for brands on an anti-counterfeiting crusade. I used to work at a government office where someone actually set up a booth selling counterfeit goods in the lobby of the building. It was wild. I mentioned it to the police guarding the facility and they simply informed me they couldn't do anything. Maybe we really do need new copyright laws in Canada?

Dr. Phil Shaves his Moustache

I've recently discovered the LA Times fashion blog "All the Rage" - it's great. Today, they've got a story on Dr. Phil shaving his moustache. Awesome. I don't even know why he shaved it (ratings?) but it's definitely important news. Ha!

Official "Sex and the City 2" Book

On May 18th, the promotional insanity that is "Sex and the City 2" continues with a new offering: the official "Sex and the City 2" book. The super-glossy, photo-tastic book will feature movie-making process, with behind-the-scenes stories from writer and director Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Here's the best part: every single look that Carrie wears in the movie is detailed in the 500-page book that includes commentary by Parker herself. More here.

Japanese Girl Drafted into Minor Leagues

18-year-old Eri Yoshida might not pitch for the Chico Outlaws until late May, but when she does, she will become the first female to play professionally in America since 1997 - and as a female knuckleballer, she is a baseball rarity.

This is so cool! It reminds me of my childhood hero Manon Rhéaume who is a goalie best known for being the first and only woman to play in an NHL exhibition game. I had a giant poster of her on my closet door growing up.

Leona Lewis doing a vegetarian clothing line

Amazing! Leona Lewis wants to do a vegetarian clothing line. In the June issue of InStyle UK, the British songstress and animal rights advocate tells the magazine that she plans to design her own vegetarian fashion line. Lewis has frequently spoken about her struggle to find cool non-leather shoes. Apparently, her friend - the fabulous Stella McCartney - may be on board as a consultant. More here.

Oh man, I can relate to her struggle. I'm always trying to find animal-friendly shoes, bags, wallets, etc. Speaking of which, I recently discovered Nine West has a great selection of fully man-made material hand bags. I picked up this one on Saturday.

Interview with Canada's Chief Justice

Allison Crawford sat down for a rare one-on-one interview the Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin to discuss her first 10 years as the chief justice. McLachlin touches on building concensus between justices, judicial review, public access to the court, public perceptions of the court activist/deferential, and her future on the bench. Overall, a very listenable discussion.

Here is the full interview.

Hat tip to my friend, Sean, for sending this my way.

Safety Pints + Trump U

Lowering the Bar has two awesomely ridiculous stories:

(#1) Forget about the election, the real important story in Britain is about pint glasses. The British government has been trying to keep British people from trying to kill each other with them. So much so, that they've designed and are now testing a new pint glass.

(#2) Someone actually willingly chose to pay $60,000 to attend Trump University. And - shockingly - it was a bad idea. Now they've decided to sue the Donald.

Best Vintage Stores in NYC

NYT has compiled a must read list for anyone about to visit NYC. They've narrowed the 100 or so vintage stores in Manhattan to a list to 14. It's not exhaustive, but it is a great sample of stores that have consistently high-quality inventory, as well as high turnover, which often enhances the chances of stumbling on a great find. The slideshow is here.

I used to be pretty good at vintage shopping when I was younger, but I've kinda given up on that lately. But, the idea of vintaging in NYC has me thinking about getting back into the mix.

Cognitive Bias Song

I'm in love with behavioural economics. If I weren't a law-student, I'd be a PhD student studying this subject. As such, I read the Freakonomics blog regularly. Today, I found this awesome "Cognitive Bias Song" on their blog. It catalogs and musically explains a useful list of cognitive biases uncovered by behavioral psychologists. Amazing! Listen and Enjoy!

Brands they Love by where they Live

Shop It To Me, the online personal shopping service, mined the data and shopping preferences of 26,000 of its members in New York, 4,800 members in Los Angeles, 26,000 members in Chicago, and 10,000 in San Francisco to find out which brands are tops in different zip codes.

Turns out, your city—even your neighborhood—may imbue you with distinct sartorial preferences: New York’s Columbia University area, 10025, prefer Banana Republic while Upper East Siders prefer Theory. Los Angeles definitely divides on Zip Code lines. In the 90077 code it’s all about Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana in Bel Air. Beverly Hills, however, prefers Juicy Couture.

Colours in Different Cultures

Neato! I came across this photo that captures what different colours mean in different cultures. Who knew Western/American people think purple is the most virtuous colour? Not me. A version of this image is the cover design of the book, Information is Beautiful. More here.

Picasso sets an Auction Record at $106.5 Million

Ever wanted to own a Picasso? Well, you probably can't afford this one! The NYT is reporting that a painting Picasso created in a single day in March 1932 became the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction on Tuesday night. “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” brought in $106.5 million.

Madonna for Interview Magazine Photoshoot

This video is floating around the inter-webs. It's a behind-the-scenes of Madonna's cover and photo-shoot for Interview Magazine's May issue. The Queen of Pop reportedly ditched airbrushing for the black-and-white photos, which is tres popular in Hollywood these days.

In the magazine, Madonna was interviewed by American director, Gus Van Sant, in which she reveals she is concentrating on her film career over music, having spent the last two-and-a-half years writing a film about the British monarchy.

The video is okay, but I LOVE the song. I looked it up: "Revolver" is the second single by Madonna from her third greatest hits album, entitled “Celebration”.

Backlash Against Law School Clinics

There has been some push-back against law school clinics in the US lately. First, in Maryland, lawmakers threatened, but ultimately backed off, a proposal to withhold state money from the University of Maryland School of Law unless its law clinics turned over case information. Now, in Louisiana, lawmakers are considering a bill that would prohibit clinics at law schools that receive government funding from suing a government agency or seeking money damages from an individual or business.

I'm not sure the rationale behind the Louisiana law makes sense:
“The intent [of the bill] is fairly simple,” said state senator Robert Adley, who introduced the bill. “Philosophically, I’m opposed to taking taxpayer money and then turning around and suing taxpayers. If you’re going to take money from the taxpayers and the government, you ought not be able to sue the taxpayers and the government.”
(1) If you can't sue taxpayers and government, who does that leave out?
(2) Wouldn't this logic also imply that since taxpayers pay for police services, then officers shouldn't be allowed to "turn around" and arrest citizens when they break the law?

More here and here.

New GPS Voices

You can now get Star Wars voices for your GPS. Well, only if you have a Tom Tom. Booo! We just ditched our old Tom Tom for a Garmin a few months ago. There are some voices from the official Garmin website, but they all look pretty weak except the Dr. Nightmare one, which is funny-ish.

Wait, I just found this site, which has AMAZING voices. Ha! OMG, I must have Delexus Hennessey direct me around town. And also, David Hasselhoff. Oh, this is the best site ever!

Heidi Klum without Makeup

I'm not loving this picture of Heidi Klum sans makeup. I've seen prettier paparazzi shots of her bare-faced playing with her kids. Either way, the trend for realism in Hollywood is a good thing. More here.

Stephen Hawking Explains Time Machines

Stephen Hawking spoke to the Daily Mail and described how to build a time machine: "All you need is a wormhole, the Large Hadron Collider or a rocket that goes really, really fast." Okay, and a wormhole is what? Hawking says wormholes are "tiny shortcuts through space and time [that] constantly form, disappear, and reform within this quantum world. And they actually link two separate places and two different times."

I have no idea what he's talking about, but I do know that whenever there is a problem on Star Trek TNG, they just chalk it up to "a tear in the space-time continuum." We just need one of those.

I came across two useful articles with helpful career advice for lawyers:

(1) The Glass Hammer interviewed Linda Carlisle, who is a Partner at White and Case. She took a unique path into law and has some useful advice about mentors, supportive spouses and the importance of "wagging your own tail."

(2) Nicole Garton-Jones writes in Slaw.ca about defining success on your own terms and not getting sucked into what other people see as the correct path to follow.

Martha Stewart Former Chanel Model

Andre Leon Talley was on "Martha" last week and he disclosed that Karl Lagerfeld recently told him that Stewart was a Chanel model in the early 1960s. Wow! How did this not come up sooner? Anyway, Styleite dug around and found some images of Stewart modeling (unfortunately, the actual Chanel shoots have yet to surface). You can see more here.

Toronto's Best Brunch

NOW Magazine has published their annual list of the best brunch spots in Toronto. Being an avid bruncher, I've been to many of Toronto's brunch hot spots. Here's my commentary on some of the spots they've mentioned.

The Drake- Pretentious, but tasty.
Starving Artist - Amazing regular waffles, vegan waffles not great.
Fresh by Juice for Life - Brunch is just OK.
Pulp Kitchen - Good, simple food.
Aunties And Uncles - Crazy line-up, food was good.
Le Petit Dejeuner - Not good.
Sadie’s Diner - Fabulous diner. Staff are really cool.
Shanghai Cowgirl - Solid place.
Sneaky Dee’s - Soooo greasy. This is good and bad.
Live Organic Food - Who wants raw food for breakfast? Not me.
United Bakers Dairy - Good but over-priced.

Also, NOW didn't mention Insomnia - but their brunch is wonderful!
RIP to my all time favourite spot The Get Real Cafe which is now closed.

UPDATE: New amazing spot! The Bloordale Pantry has a fab brunch. Try the vegetarian Bloordale Benny (griddle scones poached eggs and homemade hollandaise sauce), it`ll blow your mind! There website is under construction but you can read more here and here and here.

Avoiding all dairy?

Huffington Post has a controversial piece by Dr. Mark Hyman that advocates avoiding dairy entirely. Apparently, the dairy requirements in the food pyramid guidelines are "udderly ridiculous." (Ha!) Link here.

Hyman's Six Reasons to Avoid Milk Entirely:
  1. Milk doesn't reduce fractures.(i) Contrary to popular belief, eating dairy products has never been shown to reduce fracture risk. In fact, according to the Nurses' Health Study dairy may increase risk of fractures by 50 percent!
  2. Less dairy, better bones. Countries with lowest rates of dairy and calcium consumption (like those in Africa and Asia) have the lowest rates of osteoporosis.
  3. Calcium isn't as bone-protective as we thought.(ii) Studies of calcium supplementation have shown no benefit in reducing fracture risk. Vitamin D appears to be much more important than calcium in preventing fractures.
  4. Calcium may raise cancer risk. Research shows that higher intakes of both calcium and dairy products may increase a man's risk of prostate cancer by 30 to 50 percent.(iii) Plus, dairy consumption increases the body's level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) -- a known cancer promoter.
  5. Calcium has benefits that dairy doesn't. Calcium supplements, but not dairy products, may reduce the risk of colon cancer.(iv)
  6. Not everyone can stomach dairy.(v) About 75 percent of the world's population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products -- a problem called lactose intolerance.
Here is a video with Dr. Hyman explaining his argument.
