News: Women lawyers leaving in droves

Bummer story coming out of the Toronto Star today on how women are leaving law practice in droves. It's not exactly new news but the optimist in me keeps hoping things will get better in big law land. Either way, it's good to keep up with what barriers are still in place so we can all work to knock them down.

Hat tip: Cynthia for sending me this article.

Fashionista's Toronto Shopping Guide

Fashionista has recently posted a shopping guide for Toronto. They've hit the nail on the head. These are exactly the spots I would send a fashion-hungry friend: Ossington, Queen West, Holts. The post reminded me that I still haven't checked out the "The Room at the Bay" - it is supposed to be lovely.

Oprah and Staff Go Vegan: One Week Challenge

Great news - Oprah and 378 of her staff committed to a vegan diet for a one-week challenge. Oprah also devoted an entire episode to to talking about veganism, including interviews with vegan activist Kathy Freston and food writer Michael Pollan, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at a meat-processing plant with Lisa Ling. Alicia Silverstone over at The Kind Life Blog mentioned this story as Alicia was asked to contribute yummy suggestions for the show.
I think this kind of exposure is essential for the animal-friendly movement. So many people see veganism/vegetarianism as something strange that they could never do. This kind of coverage helps people see it's not so strange and it's also very do-able!

Miu Miu's Valentine's Day Collection

Miu Miu is celebrating Valentine's Day with a capsule collection. It includes ruffled patent clutches, satchels, iPad cases, and flower applique accessories like this head band. How cute is that? Check out the fashionologie slide show for the complete collection. The blue flower bracelet also looks adorable.

I haven't been able to confirm but I think most of the accessories are made of plastic and vinyl, so they should be good to go. Best to check though!

Style Zone: Lara Stone in a Leopard Print Coat

Wow, love this all black outfit with a pop of leopard print. No makeup and loose hair finish the look.

Spotlight: Chanel's Animal Testing Policy

I did some readin' on the Chanel website and here is the scoop: no testing on animals - sweet! However, they do use some animal derivatives such as beeswax and lanolin.

I wasn't sure what lanolin was so I did some digging on wikipedia. OK, so it's not a scientific journal, but hey. Turns out it comes from sheering sheep. It's a wax that is extracted from the freshly shorn wool. Some people say this is "OK" for vegetarians and some people say it's "Not OK". All depends on how you feel about wool products.

Rodarte Won't Get Credit for Designing Black Swan Costumes

According to Fashionista, Kate and Laura Mulleavy - the designers behind Rodarte, won't be credited for their obvious contribution to the costumes in Black Swan. The Mulleavy sisters created 40 costumes for the Darren Aronofsky thriller, including outfitting the entire ballet corps. So it's crazy that Rodarte will be shut out of the Oscars.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter, that the Mulleavy’s were “naive about movies,” meaning they didn’t negotiate credits in their initial deal, and weren’t members of the the Costume Design Guild when they worked on the film (they are now). They are ineligible for Oscar consideration because the rules dictate that only the front credit designer is eligible. Amy Westcott will take the credit, as she received the “front credit” as costume designer for the film while the Mulleavy sisters only receive a backend credit.

The Mulleavy’s have since changed their representation. Somewhere an entertainment lawyer is crying over this...

Chunky Heels

It looks like some relief is on the way for high-heel wearers. Chunky heels of varying heights were seen across the catwalks of the Pre-Fall 2011 collections. Seen above: Stella McCartney shoes. You can also see a lower version of these babies in Fab Sugar's slide show here. I'm going to be all over hunting for the lower black version - cute, career appropriate, and comfy!

Essie's "French Affair" Spring 2011

It's snowing like crazy in Toronto today. Seems like a good time to post about Essie's new Spring 2011 nail polish collection with it's cheerful pastel hues. Pictured above: Essie "French Affair" Collection nail polishes Nice Is Nice, Coat Azure and French Affair. I'm not a huge Essie fan, but I'll give these babies a try when they hit my salon.

Spotlight: Urban Decay's Vegan Policy

Urban Decay, the beauty brand best known for bright colours and goth-y names like Asphyxia and Oil Slick, turns 15 this year. Their "vegan palette" is featured on the left.

Style Junkie is launching something new, too! We're going to spotlight different fashion/beauty brands and check out whether they are animal friendly. Ratings will be out of 5 paws.

Urban Decay's website says they never test on animals: "Urban Decay is, and always has been, a cruelty-free company. You’ll notice that every box bears our cruelty-free credo: “We don’t do animal testing. How could anyone?” We insist on producing beautiful, irreverent, high-end cosmetics without conducting animal testing." Nice! They've also flagged which products contain no animal ingredients. Some do, some don't. Their website has some animal rights symbols to help identify products. Urban Decay now has a “Marley Approved” symbol to identify vegan products on their website.

I'm giving them 4.5 paws out of 5. They aren't completely vegan, but the site is full of enough information to help people make vegan choices. And, I love their no animal testing policy. Nice work, Urban Decay!

Mulberry’s Spring 2011 Campaign, Starring Lindsey Wixson and Nimue Smit

The web has been a flutter with new images from the S/S campaigns. This Mulberry ad caught my eye. Mostly because it looks like something from ANTM. Doesn't it just scream "Mr. J styled me?" Something about it doesn't seem high fashion enough. Maybe it's just me? Fashionista has more shots here.

New Scent from Etro - Via Verri

Milano has helped inspire a new scent from the Italian fashion house Etro. Via Verri, named for the Etro Profumi Boutique, is a limited-edition fragrance intended to convey a sense of energy and adventure through a blend of feminine florals (rose, jasmine, iris), heady notes (amber, musk) and spicy accords (white pepper, cardamom). Hopefully, Holts will get some of this stuff soon. I know my girl, Vanessa, will be all over this! More from T Magazine.

Funny Ontario Superior Court Decision

Jezebel has picked up on a story about an Ontario divorce decision that is going viral. Ontario Superior Court Judge Joseph Quinn -- no, not the Joseph Quinn from Dexter pictured here -- slammed a couple for "marinating in a mutual hatred so intense as to surely amount to a personality disorder."

The judge also pronounced the idea of reconciliation "laughable," mentioning the wife's attempt to run the husband over as — "always a telltale sign that a husband and wife are drifting apart."

Further evidence? The husband's habit of giving his wife's house the bird whenever he passed. Observed Quinn, "a finger is worth a thousand words and therefore, is particularly useful should one have a vocabulary of less than a thousand words." Ouch!

This ain't no Birkin

T Magazine has a story about how a screen-printed tote featuring a likeness of Hermès’ iconic Birkin bag is becoming the anti-status symbol. Roni Brunn and Olena Sholomytska, the duo behind the company (Thursday Friday) that makes the bag, have created a line that references luxury but in a cheeky and charming way.

Natalie Portman is Engaged!

Reps for the vegan Goddess extra-ordinaire, Natalie Portman, have confirmed to People.com that she engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied and that she is pregnant with the couple’s first child. The couple met filming of Black Swan, where Millepied served as both the choreographer and dance partner to Portman and co-star Mila Kunis. Congrats!

Portman was also recently named the new face of Dior's Miss Dior Cherie fragrance. Dior remade all their fabulous shoes in vegan-friendly fabrics for Portman. Amazing! If only they were available for the rest of us!

America's Next Top Model, errr... Summer Associate?

This is a bit of an older story but somehow no one I know picked up on it...
Sara Albert (now Sara Hallmark), who made it to the final four on America’s Next Top Model – Cycle 6, has managed to snag a summer associate position in the Washington office of a major international law firm. I guess her OCI was really "fierce." Above the Law has the full story here.

Vegan Sorels

The weather sure ain't getting warmer and it may be time to trade my converse in for a pair of sensible winter boots. I've bee looking into getting Sorels and their customer service peeps were helpful enough to send me a listing of the boots that contain no animal products: Sorelli Tall Lace, The Sorellington series, and the Tivolli series.

Stella McCartney - New Vegas Store

Stella McCartney has just opened a new, fabulous store in Las Vegas. Check this shizz out!

The 2,900 square foot boutique includes all things Stella, but the most impressive is a crystal horse that hangs from the ceiling. The 8,000 Swarovski crystal sculpture was created by the designer in 2004 and named after her late mother's favorite Appaloosa, Lucky Spot. Someone actually made a short video of the crystal horse.

Norway Bans Fur on the Runway

NY Mag's The Cut is reporting that Norway has become the first country to ban fur from its runways during Oslo Fashion Week, which will be held from February 14 to 20. Amazing! Although, ... the animal lover in me doesn't see a real difference between fur and leather, and we all know leather isn't going anywhere. Even so, one furball saved it better than none!

The City's - Allie Crandall

Yikes, have you guys seen recent photos of Ms. Crandall? The blue dress image is particularly upsetting. I remember Kelly Cutrone asking Allie on the show if she was "OK". Hope she gets well soon. Recently, fashion e-commerce site Revolve took the unusual step of saying "We are working closely with both the model and her agent to get her to a healthier size. She won't be appearing in any of our new product batches or in any of our fashion editorial photos moving forward until the issue is adequately addressed." Read more over at Jezebel.

Kate Moss Might Open a Modelling School

Move over Tyra and Miss J, Miss Moss is thinkin' about opening a modelling school. “I think I could open a modeling school,” Moss told the UK’s Company magazine (as reported by the Telegraph). “In Britain’s Next Top Model they put the contestants through the torture of what modeling can be like. And it honestly can be humiliating.” Wow - she watches Top Model just like the rest of us! I'm in favour of the idea, but only if they make a reality TV show out of it. Otherwise, meh. Either way, this seems like a better idea than her forthcoming jam line, Kate’s Damson Jam.

Best Places to Shop/Dine/See in Boston

I just returned from a pre-Christmas vacation in Boston. It's a great town. Not too big and not too small. The shopping was pretty good. Not as good as NYC or Chicago but still very exciting for a Canadian gal.

Here's my list of must-visit shopping in Boston:
1. Newbury Street
2. Saks Fifth Avenue
3. Copley Place Mall
4. Harvard Square

As for vegan dining, here are the top spots:
1. The Other Side Cafe (amazing place, like a punk rock Cheers)
2. Crema Cafe (great sandwhiches + great coffee)
3. Clear Conscience Cafe (great coffee and comfy couches)

Attractions worth checking out:
1. MFA
2. Boston Bruins game
3. Harvard Museum of Natural History

Chanel Gondola

Merry Christmas everyone! Here's a snap of the colour I chose for my festive manicure: Chanel Gondola. It's a lovely dark berry red with pretty gold and red shimmer.

I got my nails done while on vacation in Boston at MiniLuxe after reading a great review from InStyle magazine. Very happy with the service and the place was immaculately clean. Like surgically clean. Which is what you want to see when trying out a new place in a foreign city.

Chanel Riva Nail Polish

I know, I know... I've been terrible at updating this blog lately, but exams are upon us so I'm back in full gear looking to procrastinate!

Check out this GORGEOUS Chanel polish in a dreamy blue color called Riva that debuted at the 2010-2011 cruise collection show in Saint-Tropez.

Holts at Yorkdale didnt have any yesterday, but I'm hoping I'll have time to hit Holts on Bloor shortly.

All Lacquered Up has a swatch, review and comparison here.
